PART TWO
…fashion with an eye on the planet. Why?
“Extending the life of textile products is one of the most efficient ways to significantly reduce the impact on the climate and the environment. Greater durability shall allow the consumer to use their clothing for a longer period.”
These two very succinct and clear sentences introduce the new European regulations imposed on the fashion industry to stem damage to the climate.
The way we do business in fashion and the way we consume must change. We are consuming far too much.
Marie Kondo, the organiser extraordinaire, suggests we buy for the sake of buying with an impulse often pushed to fill a void or boost a mood. That instant gratification, however, fades so quickly and leaves the very emptiness we were hoping to fill. Can you relate?
This way of life damages our spirits and our environment, and it is time for us to turn the page. We have a suggestion on how to painlessly begin.
It starts by taking one step back and buying with greater awareness and choosing items of high quality that guarantee a long shelf life: the TIMELESS piece that not only lasts style wise but doesn’t perish either.
So now what does all this have to do with The Italian Collection? Quite a lot! We were founded in 2010 born from the desire to promote a different side of the fashion coin…by focusing on all aspects of high quality, on the product, and on a contemporary design with a long shelf life.
What differentiates us from all the others?
Where we “knit” together is that we sell fashion items, accessories mostly, bags, jewellery, scarves, wool, and cashmere casual knitwear. Where our paths deviate is that, while we may consider trends, The Italian Collection has never succumbed to them and has always sold high-quality, timeless fashion pieces.
On this path, we have never strayed. Hand crafted quality paired with uniqueness are the two components that guide all our curated creations. Our very precise style springs from an aversion to untidiness and clutter.
“The timeless nature of our product is fashion with an eye on the planet” is a slogan coined by The Italian Collection. We are a unique space that offers the opportunity to buy well and buy less. Thanks to the versatility of our accessories and clothing items, we only sell fashion pieces which may be worn on many occasions and in diverse climates.
And no, we are not proclaiming to be a catalyst for change, but we do believe our company’s mission aligns with responsible fashion and is helping us all buy differently and more responsibly…with the added benefits along the way that only “fashion with an eye on the plant” can guarantee.
We all have a role to play in taking care of our planet. Don’t you think?

The Unique Properties of Alpaca Wool
Unlike traditional sheep wool, alpaca wool is hypoallergenic, making it an excellent choice for individuals with sensitive skin. It lacks lanolin, the natural oil found in sheep’s wool that can cause irritation, and its smooth fibres create a silky texture that feels delightful against the skin. Moreover, alpaca wool is surprisingly lightweight despite its exceptional insulating properties, keeping you warm without adding bulk. Its natural elasticity ensures durability, while its moisture-wicking abilities make it a practical option for any climate.
Another impressive feature of alpaca wool is its eco-friendliness. Alpacas have a low environmental impact; they graze lightly, minimising damage to their native grasslands, and their soft-padded feet prevent soil erosion. When you invest in alpaca wool, you’re not just buying a luxurious fabric, you’re supporting sustainable practices that benefit local communities and the environment.

The History of Alpaca Wool
Alpaca wool has a rich history that dates back thousands of years to the ancient civilisations of South America, particularly in the Andean regions of Peru, Bolivia, and Chile. Highly prized by the Incas, alpacas were domesticated for their soft, luxurious fleece, which was used to create garments for royalty and the elite.
The wool was considered so valuable that it was often referred to as "the fibre of the gods." After the fall of the Incan Empire, alpaca wool continued to be woven into traditional textiles, and today, it is still celebrated for its exceptional warmth, softness, and durability. Its eco-friendly properties, along with its hypoallergenic qualities, make alpaca wool a prized material for modern fashion and textiles.

Alpaca Wool in Modern Fashion
Fashion designers and enthusiasts worldwide are embracing alpaca wool for its unmatched versatility. From cosy sweaters and scarves to elegant coats and tailored suits, the fibre lends itself beautifully to a range of garments. Its natural sheen gives it a sophisticated appearance, while its ability to take on vibrant dyes ensures that alpaca wool products are as visually striking as they are practical.
Apart from its aesthetic and functional qualities, alpaca wool’s thermal properties also make it a top choice for winter wardrobes. It provides unparalleled warmth, trapping heat more efficiently than many other fibres while remaining breathable. This makes it perfect for layering, whether you’re braving frosty urban mornings or heading to a weekend retreat in the mountains.
In contemporary fashion, alpaca wool is no longer confined to traditional or rustic styles. Brands are reinterpreting this classic material with modern designs that appeal to a global audience. Take, for instance, we, at The Italian Collection have worked on a beautiful sweater called Women’s Alpaca Wool Boatneck Sweater.
Crafted by Denny Maglificio, this piece exemplifies the fusion of heritage craftsmanship and a beautiful design. Made in Italy, it combines a blend of alpaca and virgin wool, with a leaf stitch knit embellished with lurex for a touch of sparkle. Its loose fit and ribbed details make it a versatile addition to any wardrobe, perfect for layering or standing alone as a statement piece.

Why Invest in Alpaca Wool?
Beyond its immediate appeal, investing in alpaca wool is a decision rooted in practicality and sustainability. This fibre’s resilience ensures that garments retain their shape and quality for years, making them valuable long-term additions to your wardrobe.
Moreover, alpaca wool is naturally resistant to odours and stains, reducing the need for frequent washing and extending the lifespan of your clothing. By purchasing products made from this material, you’re supporting ethical production practices and empowering artisans who rely on alpaca farming for their livelihoods. In doing so, you contribute to a fashion industry that prioritises quality, sustainability, and social responsibility.

Caring for Your Alpaca Wool Garments
Proper care is essential to maintain the beauty and longevity of your alpaca wool clothing. Fortunately, the material’s natural resilience makes it easy to manage. Spot-clean minor stains with a gentle detergent, and opt for hand washing or dry cleaning for more thorough cleaning. When drying, lay the garment flat to prevent stretching and avoid direct sunlight to preserve its colour and texture. With a little attention, your alpaca wool pieces will remain pristine for years to come.
